Today is finally the day that we've been waiting for, May 18th: The reopening day of Italy! We are now allowed to go outside of our zones, but still within our regions, without any certification. Although we still need to take precautions like maintaining proper distancing and wearing masks at all times.
The mayor of Florence said that yesterday, May 17, Florence had zero new cases! Finally some good news! But again, we still need to be cautious and follow rules.
I remembered the day when we entered Phase 2 last May 4, the rules were very strict. We were only allowed to go around within our zones. We had to bring a certification and, to be honest, it really didn't feel like anything changed from the lockdown.
Anyway, today is a good day! I finally got to see the city center after 2 months and I couldn't be any happier!
Some of the shops and restaurants are now open. The gyms, cinemas, museums, barbershops, and hotels are still closed for now. Gatherings and parties are not allowed too.
I couldn't help but think how the Italians will be adjusting on greeting someone since they're used to kissing on the cheeks or giving hugs. But after what I saw today, just by hearing the way they talk and by looking through their eyes, you can really feel the sincerity. Everyone was happy and content.
It's funny how before this pandemic happened, we met our friends at night in a bar and had drinks. But now, meeting friends will be at parks, piazzas, or any open space and just chat with them. It's like living in the old times!
The past two months were really scary and depressing. There was no written handbook on how to deal with this weird situation. We all had to find ways on how to cope with everything. In the end, it made me realize a lot of things. This situation made me appreciate everything around me and that it's okay to not be productive at difficult times, to always take care of my health, and to be kind to one another.
I would not lie, I was very excited and scared at the same time because I really don't know what will happen. However, I still feel a bit scared. I know it will take time to get used to this new normal. I just hope that with whatever our new normal will be, everything will be okay. :)
